The list of foods to avoid while pregnant is insane. Between the "offical" list and all the internet rumors it seems like you can't eat anything. Not that I am paying too much attention to these lists.

BTW, one of the items on the internet rumors list? Pinneapples. WTH?

too much acid?

It has something in it that might cause early labor. Of course, like most internet rumors, you would have to eat a lot of pinneapple for it to be an issue.

A couple days ago when I was getting tested I was drinking a diet coke waiting for a blood test in a waiting room just for pregnant people. I got some looks.

However, I was trying to get rid of a migraine but they didn't know that.

If you were drinking a real coke, they'd give you looks as well, what with HFCS and all.

Next time, drink it from a flask.

It is so funny. People really thing caffeine is almost as bad as alcohol in pregnancy but the doctor's tell you that anything under 300mg is fine.

I should get a flask with pop in it. That would be awesome.

Women in Europe (and also here) are encouraged to drink small amounts of alcohol when pregnant, half a glass of wine twice a week. Emel did this all through her pregnancy on the advice of her doctor.

I think most of these pregnancy rules are make-it-up-as-you-go-along. Ask one doctor, get one set of answers; ask another doctor, get another set.

I haven't wanted to drink at all. I just feel sort of hungover so it hasn't been a problem to avoid it. However, I might drink a little later on.

I totally agree, there isn't enough studies to tell you the facts and no one is going to do studies on pregnant women.

OMG a diet coke while pregnant? I'm surprised you weren't instantly the subject of 15,000 mommy-blogs ranting about how CPS should be called and you should be sent of to Guantanamo Bay forever!

Maybe pineapple is an allergy thing? I know D is allergic to fresh pineapple--so some people probably put it in the peanuts/shellfish/etc. category.

Ridiculous. I'm pretty sure my mom did not actively avoid any foods while pregnant with me. Not to say that we don't benefit from more current knowledge, but I think that it can make people crazy sometimes. I turned out fine. *Twitch-twitch*

The rumor it is could cause early labor.

I also just read you aren't supposed to eat "Fiber One" bars because they have chicory root extract in them.

I would stop reading pregnancy forums but I am sort of amazed by people that are OVERLY WORRIED ABOUT EVERYTHING.

For funzies you should state on a pregnancy forum that you plan not to breastfeed. Watch them swarm!!!

What would be even better is saying "If my baby tests positive for Downs, I'll terminate", which is true.

I actually saw someone post about their decision to terminate the pregnancy and the comments were brutal.

*gasps-and-stammers!* *Gasps! And! Stammers!*

I would say there would be pearl clutching, but pearls are a choking hazard to an unborn baby so Good Mommies burn them in a ritual, smoke-free, chemically-sound ceremony before birth.

(I totally would do the same thing w/r/t Downs too.)

I think most people do the same thing w/r/t Downs so I think it is funny that people act so outraged! It is this thing that people just don't talk about.

The hilarious part is that 90+% of women abort when they get a positive test for Downs. Just about EVERYONE does it. Yet still, honestly saying it online gets the OMG YOU MONSTER reactions.

EXACTLY. I think people react so badly because they don't think they would or don't want to face the fact that deep down they would.

Pineapple is a new one. The big things when I was pregnant were sushi, soft cheese, and deli meats. OMG DEATH TO THE BEBE.

Dont tell anyone, I eat deli meat.

I sort of love lunchables.

I would eat sushi if I found that at all appealing. Other than lunchables I am having it hard to eat meat at all.

In my first trimester of first pregnancy, I ate Frosted Flakes a lot. Smell of cooking meat was nasty.

Second pregnancy was better. I did do a lot more relaxation of the "rules". :)

The first trimester seems like the one you need to worry about the most. So many things are being formed. Then the baby just starts fattening up!

I ate pretty much exclusively sushi in the first tri with all my pregnancies.

Which is so funny to me because pretty much looking (or really thinking about) meat has made me sick. Except for lunchables so I eat those.

I don't know a thing about babies and pregnancy, but how come our parents could eat most everything, and were told that the occasional wine with dinner was fine, but now pregnant women aren't supposed to even think about beer or hotdogs, or fish, or lunch meat, or eggs, or water that isn't passed through a reverse osmosis purifier and then distilled. Has food really gotten that unsafe or are people just super extra cautious?

I would note that with the advent of all these restrictions, allergies in kids are also rising.

I've wondered if there is a link with all of this and the allergies. But I've also heard that there is a big problem with confusion over allergies and sensitivities. Blood tests and skin tests are not conclusive to finding out if a food allergy is actually an allergy. The only 100% sure way to find out is to have the person in a doctors office or hospital and slowly give them more and more of the food to see if there is a reaction. People rarely do that so food allergies are perhaps way over diagnosed.

Date: 2013-03-07 07:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com
yeah, I think this is true. I touch an orange and I get hives which means it is an allergy. I haven't gone to the doctor's office for this.

I did get allergy tests for different pollens. that wasn't a fun test.

I have some sort of allergic reaction to some dyes and adhesives used in shoes. For years I had bad dermatitis and burning itching on my feet. It too several doctors before one realized the cause. The doctor told me that in his experience it's usually an allergy to some sort of chromium compound but the only way to find out would be have a bunch of uncomfortable, expensive tests done in a big hospital probably in New York City because most places can't test for obscure chemicals. He then told me that even if I found out what it was, it would be almost impossible to know what's in everything. So I now have to careful with what I wear on my feet I don't wear leather footwear (not for anything more than a day or two), if there is rubber inside there is a chance that it will cause a problem. I can sometimes find dyed vegan sneakers or shoes, but the even then there is a chance that the adhesive used to hold the natural rubber could bother me.

The mind set is "There is a (very small chance) this will harm your baby. If something happens won't you wish that you did everything that you could have to prevent that bad thing from happening"?

The thing that gets me is the rule about soft cheeses. So, you aren't really supposed to eat unpasteurized soft cheese. However, most of the cheese in the US is pasteurized, you have to look for cheese that isn't pasteurized. So many people are totally anti-soft cheese without cause!

we don't have anything real that we can do to positively affect pregnancy, so we've made up a bunch of things. And then shun women who don't abide by the made-up rules. It's pretty fab.

So with each of my kids, I did a big time exposure to a no-no within the first few weeks before I knew I was pregnant. :)

With Amelia, I bleach washed a basement while we were finishing it ourselves.

With Katie, I painted a small bathroom twice.

Amazing they have all of their organs!

The paint thing seems weird to me. If you are using Latex paint (The most common) why would you even worry? I mean, unless you paint for a living, then the exposure might be enough to cause concerns. Plus the solvents used to cleanup the paint is more of a problem, right? It isn't like they put lead in paint anymore.

I plan on painting the baby's room this summer.

Seriously, people are so paranoid. ;)

Right now I am writing a product selector for 3M that let's you know what protection you should use for different projects. Even not pregnant they have three respirators, three eye protectors and three kinds of gloves.

Also, did you know you should wear a dust mask while dusting?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

My daughter who I breastfed for 13 months has allergies.
My daughter who I pumped for 10 months then switched to formula? No allergies (except light seasonal, which everyone in Atlanta gets - we go above 5000 in pollen for a few weeks here.)

Wait until I can post a link to this product selector. It makes me laugh so much!

I was breastfed until 10 months and I have a bunch of allergies. My brother, who my mom couldn't produce enough milk for and switched to formula and rice cereal at 3 months, no allergies at all.

You can't really control for most of this stuff.

You should see people's faces when I say I still sometimes change the cat boxes.

It is pretty easy to eat everything on that list since it is SO RIDICULOUS. Another item on the "don't eat" list is chicory root which is a lot of granola bars. Oops! LOL.

Now if only I could ignore medication warnings as easily.
