I have confirmation that gwangi and I have both tickets and a hotel room for Convergence this year. I am excited to spend my 4th of July weekend showing Zach the joys of CON since it is his first time. YAY!!
I wasn't sure if you were going to do that this year! We will totally help you with it since I am taking all four days off!
I think we are doing the SFGH, we usually don't plan it until the last moment because it doesn't need a ton of planning. We just need to print out flyers and buy snack food. LOL.
I'm not running JIS this year for obvious reasons, but I'm helping with it. It's not really a ton of planning either - we made the decorations last year, so it's mostly just set up and tear down.
I want Zach to like it so having him help set things up will be a good idea. I also think Patrick should take him to panels that are real nerdy (instead of geeky nerdy). I don't think Zach will like the "Chicks dig Time Lords" that I really sort of liked last year. LOL.
Fair warning, Patrick is not really a congoer. Like Zach, he isn't really into fandom - he and I geek out on certain shows, but not to where he really wants to go to panels on them. He isn't interested in anime either, or parties, though maybe I could get him into some gaming ;) He bought a badge for this year but only to make it easier to help me with JIS. Also, with so many kids, he'll likely be at home with them a lot of the time.
If there's any panels you think Zach would like, though, I'm sure we can arrange for Patrick to be there too to lend non-nerdy support ;)
OTOH, this year I was thinking of bringing Patrick and Isaac to some of the Quantum Sandbox events. I bet Zach would like those since he's a sciencey type ;) You might even see if there's anything cool he can think of that he could lead. There's plenty of time to still propose stuff. He'd probably have some good ideas for hands-on science activities that people could get involved in.
That is what I meant about the nerdy stuff, I am not sure how much Zach will like about CON but he is willing to try it one year (the offer of a hotel room and a tipsy me was a big draw too, LOL).
I bet he would like to hang out with Patrick and Issac at the Quantum Sandbox events, he loves that sort of thing.
I have been telling him that he should run a panel. My suggestion was "Disease vectors at a convention" or "Zombie outbreaks, how possible is an epidemic?"
We are, too - I've really enjoyed staying at the Sofitel! We got a three nights for the price of two offer awhile back, so we just booked rooms through the hotel.
I usually book my own hotel rooms but I decided to go through the convention this year. It took forever to hear back from them but we finally did on the 15th. Yay!! (of course, if I had read my email I would have known we wouldn't hear until 3/15. LOL)
