Poll

I was going to make a poll about existential crisises but I decided not to inflict that on you. So, here is one that my mom and I argue about everytime we do dishes together:

[Poll #1173252]

Sponges are havens for bacteria. I use a dish brush OR those green scrubby things, depending on my mood.

You sound like my mom!

I use the green scratchy pad things when I have something that won't come off otherwise. However, I like sponges.

[identity profile] avecvu.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's TRUE. Sponges gross me out.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Wash rags gross me out so I understand. :)

[identity profile] ntiva.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You can microwave sponges to kill the bacteria. I usually wet the sponge, get it a little bit soapy, put it on a dish or bowl, and nuke it for 2 minutes, then I let it cool off before rinsing it out.

[identity profile] trista.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, it never occurred to me to nuke with soap. I've always washed it with soap, rinsed like crazy, and then nuked.

[identity profile] ntiva.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's always worked for me.

You can also run them through the dishwasher, but I don't think that kills the bacteria as well as microwaving it does.

[identity profile] trista.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately for me, I am the dishwasher.

One of my friends when I was younger wanted to do the bacteria killing thing but didn't have a microwave, so she put the sponge in the toaster. Bad, bad idea. She had sponge flambé.

[identity profile] avecvu.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, but I'm not likely to do that every time I want to wash dishes, which is what I'd need to do. As it is, I boil the brush every so often.

[identity profile] ntiva.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't microwave it every day. Just every few days when it gets a little stinky. :)

I just be sure to rinse it out really really well each time I'm done using it and let it dry. That helps keep the bacteria at bay.

[identity profile] sterlingphoenix.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
They make bacteria-resistant sponges now. I've never had one of them turn all gross before it was time to throw it out anyway.

[identity profile] purplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I use a brush.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot about those when I wrote this. I actually have one under my sink somewhere.

[identity profile] inkedmama.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
we use one of the plastic-bristled brushy thingies that dispense soap when push a little button on top.

generally, we just don't wash dishes by hand unless absolutely necessary (like whatever really can't go in the dishwasher).

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not blessed with a dishwasher but I figured that everyone has stuff they don't put in the dishwasher.

I am always scared the brushes will scratch my plates and glasses.

[identity profile] inkedmama.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
so far, so good on not scratching things. if i washed everything by hand, i'd likely use a sponge-type thing. i liked dina's method of sponge de-gunkifying. she's so smart! :)

[identity profile] phaedie.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My mum crochets this cloths that are awesome for cleaning everything from dishes to faces just don't get them mixed up.
I like those and a brush but sponges freak me out.

[identity profile] trista.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, how cool! Do you know what sort of yarn she uses? Are they washcloth-ish, or more Bath and Body Works mesh sponge-ish? I so need a new crocheting project.

[identity profile] phaedie.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Four ply cotton yarn.
I googled crochet washcloths on a whim and there seems to be a few patterns out there.
The one's Mum makes are apparently really simple, she pumps them out like mad.

[identity profile] trista.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I'm going to google them, too, then. I'm excited about the idea of crocheting something useful that isn't a scarf or a blanket.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome. I used to make knit wash clothes for presents before I gave up knitting. I used bamboo yarn which was cool.

[identity profile] damncutekitty.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I use those Dobie sponges with the plastic netting on them for non-scratching scrubby power. I also wash everything with the water as hot as I can get it (and wear gloves while I do dishes).

People who have dishwashers are so lucky!

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I want a dishwasher so much. I know where I would put it and everything, I just need to finish my living room first.

[identity profile] polyranger.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I use one of those sponges on a stick which has the dish soap held in the handle.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I haven't seen those, I feel like I am missing out on a new dish washing technology.

[identity profile] polyranger.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You can get them at CUB, Rainbow, Target, Wal-Mart, and several other retailers.

Even Amazon.com...

Happy washing!

[identity profile] bella-phenomena.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Right now, I use a sponge, with a scruby surface side. But sometimes, I think how I should use a washcloth because I have a variety of them for the kitchen, and they would be reuseable, as oppose to the sponges, which I just eventually throw out.

But the dish clothes always seems to acquire that smell after a day or so if they're not dried out right, and it sticks on your hands for what seems like ever. This is why I'm not a huge fan of using a wash cloth.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree about wash clothes. If I do use them I wash them right away. Since I didn't have a washer for many years I got in the habit of using a sponge because it was easier to keep clean.

[personal profile] pork_chop 2008-04-18 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
i use a dish scrub wand, which is like a sponge... but i don't have to touch it and get my hands all stinky.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I am learning a lot about dish washing items.

[identity profile] ctakahara.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I use a dishwasher, so really I should've voted "other."

And when I have to do dishes by hand, it means the dishwasher is broken, so it's still "other" because I use "calling my landlord and bitching about it."

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. I need a dishwasher.

[identity profile] demanufactor.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Your LJ is really popular.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It is when I talk about dish washing!

[identity profile] demanufactor.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha.
I sponge it up with hot water that boils my skin off and lots of soap.

Also did you get that email i sent to your gmail? :O

[identity profile] jessikate.livejournal.com 2008-04-18 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I use a sponge that has mesh on one side and a scrubby fabric on the other. I should probably use dishrags, since I have a huge stack of them (I make them as gifts and don't give out as many as I make), but I just don't feel like they do as good a job.

And I am the dishwasher here. I hate that but I think I'd still be handwashing 80% of the dishes if we had an actual dishwasher. *Sigh*

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't hand wash anything if I had a dishwasher. As it is I try not to dirty dishes because I hate washing them so much I only do it every few weeks.

No machine (yet). Actually I rarely use dishes at my place, if I eat here I use paper plates so I won't have to wash anything. I only really ever bake here.

I don't even think I have ever bought bleach. Weird, I never thought of that.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2008-04-19 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
PS. Your comment makes me want to blech my whole kitchen now. Ha!
