Ooh, it never occurred to me to nuke with soap. I've always washed it with soap, rinsed like crazy, and then nuked.

Yeah, it's always worked for me.

You can also run them through the dishwasher, but I don't think that kills the bacteria as well as microwaving it does.

Unfortunately for me, I am the dishwasher.

One of my friends when I was younger wanted to do the bacteria killing thing but didn't have a microwave, so she put the sponge in the toaster. Bad, bad idea. She had sponge flambé.
