They are nice. I own three if you ever want to borrow them. Two are nice, one is more on the cheap side. With the CPAP machine I don't get to use them much, but my stepson is really getting into Scouting and it is SO nice to not have to purchase all the gear.
I might take you up on that. I sort of don't want to buy one until I use one and know what I like. I have done so much canoe camping that I have never used an internal frame pack. This hike is only two days so even if I hated it, it wouldn't be so bad.
The trick is all the small adjustments to make the straps ride where they belong. After helping over a hundred boys figure it out, I have a pretty good handle on it.
I prefer the external frame packs. One, it gives some space between your back and the pack so it gives better ventilation. Two, it gives you something to tie other things to if you have the need.
If you have done a lot of canoe camping, then I bet you have a lot of the other stuff already. But I also have foam sleeping pads and all sorts of backpacking gear. I even have inflatable serving bowls. LOL!
I sold my pack stove years ago and I never did get my own water filter.
I am with you on all points. Actually, I don't get buyer's remorse on my big purchases. I agonize over getting the right thing and generally enjoy them. It's the small stuff I blow money on that makes me nuts.. like DVDs. Why do I buy so many DVDs? I don't regret buying my camera or my new lens. I don't regret buying my GTI. I don't regret buying my motorcycle. I enjoy them all quite thoroughly.
I don't even want a fancy camera, just a little point and shoot one. It sucks not having a camera. :(
The car is something I go back and forth on. My current car has 115k on it and is 10 years old. If I got a new car I wouldn't have to fix it up all the time but then I would have a car payment and it just seems like you can't buy a car for less than 15k, even used so that means I would have a $400 a month car payment and this is when my brain shuts down and I keep driving the car that seems to be falling apart.
There are LOADS of great deals on used cars in my area. Seriously. Have a look around. I can't believe how many great cars I've seen for under $10k recently.
But you are right that no matter what you do in regards to a car you will be putting money out.
I need to ask my coworker who is very into cars to help me find one. I don't even know what sort of car to get, I just want a sedan with good gas mileage and a sun/moon roof (cause i really want one).
