The trick is all the small adjustments to make the straps ride where they belong. After helping over a hundred boys figure it out, I have a pretty good handle on it.
I prefer the external frame packs. One, it gives some space between your back and the pack so it gives better ventilation. Two, it gives you something to tie other things to if you have the need.
If you have done a lot of canoe camping, then I bet you have a lot of the other stuff already. But I also have foam sleeping pads and all sorts of backpacking gear. I even have inflatable serving bowls. LOL!
I sold my pack stove years ago and I never did get my own water filter.
