Hmmmmmm.

So... like you can't eat much starchy foods either? What about complex carbs? Is this related to diabetes?

I am a nice shark, not a mindless eating machine. If I am to change this image, I must first change myself. Fish are friends, not food.

yep, that's right. it's like the opposite of diabetes, so i have the same glycemic effects but in general my blood sugar is pretty low. as long as i stick to whole grains i'm ok. i avoid most rice and pasta and potatoes.

This is very interesting!

So how low does your blood sugar go? Do you faint a lot?

(Sorry, I'm just so curious!)

when it drops, i feel it instantly. after a few REALLY bad episodes, i'm good at catching it right away so it won't go too low. first i get kinda fisheyed or blurry vision. then i get slow. then i get cold sweats. then i get crabby.

and it's a very special kind of crabby, the one where anyone within 100 feet of me will feel the pain of my presence. it feels like an exposed nerve. i've had a couple times i've had to take all my clothes off and lay on the bed without anything touching me because i can't stand the feeling. i can't talk or think. i just wait for it to pass. it takes about an hour or so to regulate.

i carry tiny boxes of raisins with me everywhere... that'll fix a blood sugar crash within 5 or 10 minutes if i catch it fast enough.

So is this like a situation where when you eat carbs, too much insulin is released, resulting in a sudden crash? So you have to eat protein and or fat along with the carbs so that the sugar stays in the blood longer?

(Erm, just tell me to shut up if I'm annoying you... this is seriously facinating. I've heard of the condition before, but I've never had the opportunity to talk to anyone who's had it)

oh god, i could talk about it for hours and bore you right to death.

yeah, you take in too many carbs and it spikes your blood sugar, so your body releases insulin to knock it down. there are actually two things: high blood sugar has different effects... that's the drunk sensation. i get very very tired and usually have to sleep it off. but it's not the exposed-nerve feeling (sugar being the thing that insulates your nerves, i guess). that's why i try to stick to a strict eating plan so i don't get that up-and-down blood sugar effect. it's the worst.

the really low blood sugar i get when i don't eat often enough, or especially when i'm stressed. the hormones that get released when you're stressed eat up all your blood sugar too quickly. i've had times where something has scared me badly and i've had an adrenaline rush, and all of a sudden my energy is completely gone. it's scary.

eating whole grain carbs solves the problem of the blood sugar spiking too quickly, because they take longer to break down. for example, i can usually tolerate brown rice syrup as a sweetener, whereas honey would have me wishing i was dead.

I think the crash that comes after an adrenaline rush is pretty normal, since the adrenaline speeds up like every system in the body, and results in using up all the sugar, so that makes sense. I get that too, but probably not as bad.

The drunk sensation, that's really interesting! I wonder why that is, or how that's working? The exposed-nerve ending thing, that's kinda wierd too. The thing that insulates the nerves is the myelin sheath, which, to the best of my recollection, is made up largely of fat. Hmm. Fat is stored sugar. Maybe the drop in sugar makes your body release the glucagon, and then starts harvesting the fat cells to replace the missing sugar? But then that doesn't make sense because the insulin is storing the sugar. Hmm... very interesting indeed!

When did you find out you had the condition?

oh my god. we're totally going to get the whole process figured out, i think! that's awesome.

well, here's the sick-and-wrong part. i pretty much did it to myself. i mean, i can't eat sugar, but i've also worked myself out of tolerating a lot of carbs in general just by diet. according to my doctor, that's the price you pay for committing to a very healthy diet (i do the mostly fruit/vegetable/whole grain/fake meat kinda thing), because your body then reacts to things it's not used to in an extreme way. usually that's awesome. except when i crave french fries or something. haha. then i say, 'if i eat this, i'll have to lay down afterwards.' and sometimes that's what i do.
