Headache and Quilts

I woke up this morning with a headache. It sucked because I was really looking forward to Sexy dress-up day. Anyways, I watched old movies and napped all day instead which was okay since it is snowing outside and cozy inside.

Once my head got better I started thinking about ways to quilt Zach's quilt. I want something that will soften the straight lines so I think I am going to do an all-over meandering pattern in the center part. I was thinking about doing a fancy free motion pattern on the border but I am not sure.

Lately I have been thinking about fabric stashing a lot. I look at blogs and envy people of there huge fabric stashes full of pretty fabric but then I think about how much they spent on that without using it and Midwestern sensibilities are offended. Why would you buy fabric without a plan? I actually have enough fabric that I should be able to quilt until the rest of Zach's schooling without buying anything other than batting and maybe backing fabric. I did buy all new stuff for Zach's quilt but I got some back pay/bonus and I decided to use the leftover money after the new sink on something I wanted.

On the sewing machine front I learned the my aunt has my grandma's sewing machine and doesn't use it. So she is going to give it to me. I am pretty excited about this because I have been using my mom's sewing machine for two years and fell guilty about it.

I also have a singer feather weight that I really want to try quilting with but the stand that it is on is so uncomfortable to sit at. I guess I am taller than the average woman in the 1930s.

Did I tell you I tested out one of the big quilting machines at the Fair? Pretty epic. I wrote my name in a sample quilt. But SO spendy. And also requiring a lot of space.

There are quilt shops that rent them. I am taking a class over Christmas on how to use one, I am so looking forward to it.

I would live to have one but our place isn't big enough and I don't want to buy a regular sewing machine!

I like sewtropolis but I haven't actually used the long arm yet. They just got it.

It would be so awesome to quilt that way instead of on my sewing machine. It is hard to wrestle fabric sometimes.

I have a lot of fabric because when I bought my sewing machine, I'd see neat fabric and think "OOooh, I'll make something awesome with this!" but never got around to it. I should really just sell it. It gives me the heebie jeebies when I think about how much money I spent on fabric that I'll most likely never use.

Selling it would bring back some of the money.

I find that if I buy something because I like it then I can't really put it into anything because it doesn't really match anything.
I have to be careful about that. However, I am going to make an "eye-spy" quilt for my niece next year and I'll use up some of the novelty fabric then. Also, scrap quilts.

Steph was telling me about one of the other Girl Scout leaders who told her that her hobby was "buying craft supplies". I can relate to that, but I try not to.

Yeah, I try really hard to only buy things I am going to use right away. I worry about when we get a house and more room because right now lack of space is a big reason I don't want to buy stuff.

I've amassed a pretty insane yarn stash. I don't have Midwestern sensibilities, so for some time the size of my stash did not bother me at all. In fact I used to say "yarn acquisition" was a separate hobby from knitting.

But lately I feel burdened by all my stuff - including my yarn stash. And I'm not going to add to it for a while.

I often feel burdened by stuff and I am not sure if that is just me or being a Midwestern. For instance, I never have collected books, CD or DVDs because I don't want to own, just consume them. So things like Netflix and spotify are great for me.

I think yarn is much more useful to stash. Fabric feels dated so fast so you really need to use it right away. Also, fabric lines are sold for such limited times it encourages you to buy stuff you like without a purpose.

My aunt's mom was a huge quilter and when she died she had a huge selection of fabric left. My aunt has slowly been bringing it up for me to use and I have to give away about half of it because it is stuff I would never use. My mom's church has a quilting group and they will take it.
