not me, my sister was in the army. some guy tried to rape her, then went on to either sexually assault or rape four other woman soldiers and he got 6 months and a bad conduct discharge from the army.

actually, no

35 is the cut off.

still, would you want to work for someplace that laws were still in the 50s?

did you know the army doesn't consider date rape rape?

From: [identity profile] f-o-n-y.livejournal.com
the american legal system doesn't often consider that rape, either.

From: [identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com
well, it does it just makes it hard to prove. the military code of justice doesn't even consider that possible. seriously, these laws are so fucking backwards.

i heard there was other women he assualted but they wouldn't come forward.

and it is much more likely in a civilian trial to have women on the jury. unlike the military.

um...

welcome the army, people are all brainwashed there. serinia was the only one that reported it, all the other ones didn't say anything happened until they were investigating serinia's incident. there are serious issues with this in the army.

my uncle (was in the national guard) told me when I was in high school that he would never let a girl in his family join the army. So I took that to heart.

i don't know where to begin

when jens told me i was so sick to my stomach and i started crying. it is so incredibly fucked up that the military legal system is a piece of shit. i will write letters etc. but i know that nothing will ever give her the satisfaction of him doing way, way, more time.

Seen it all before

Unfortunately I did my 4 yrs serving my country in the Marine Corps, and I can tell you from experience that the 6 mo. is not uncommon. The military justice system as they call it only provides justice for those that deserve it (in their minds) the system (especially in texas) is very much the good ole' boys network and the thought of women in the military still pisses em off but good. Tell your sister I'm sad to hear of her experience, and that not all men in the military (past or present) are bad, the fact that it even went to trial is a miracle as they usually brush it under then rug, let's just hope he enjoys his time in jail and that one day a big guy named maddog decides he looks really good in them jeans and gives him a tast of his own medicine.

yeah, i nkow, the worst part was how many people were not into making waves with this. my sister, unlike they way she would have reacted a year ago, is now passionate about getting people to know about this. i don't know what good it will do but she will write as many letters as she can and get other too also.

it went to trial because my sister reported it and kept on them about bringing it to trial because she didn't think anything other than that would happen. i think that was the big difference, she expected justice and pushed for it. it failed but at least the army had to go through the farce.

yeah, most guys are ok, this one is just an creepy predator.

You need to send a note to Sen. Carl Levin, chairman armed services committee (and tell everyone else to also) if you flood his inbox with this issue (maybe) it will get something done?
