My permanent-traveler's brain says sailing lessons, just because so many times I've been excluded from a free ride to somewhere cool because of not having sailing skills. Sailing skills are like the driver's license of the surface traveler's world.

Me, with no money: "Where you guys headed?"
Guy on boat: "Africa, maybe. We'll see."
Me: "Is it possible I could hitch a ride to We'll See?"
Guy: "Sure - you know how to rig a blah blah blah?"
Me: "Er... not exactly."
Guy: "Do you at least know how to tie a blah blah knot?"
Me: "mmm... well... no."
Guy: "Hmm, well, we do have room for one more, but really you need at least basic sailing skills."

I cannot tell you how many times I've had that same basic conversation. I would jump at the chance to be able to answer "of course" to those questions next time. Seriously, you can get on just about any boat for free if you're useful to the crew.

I tend not to drink coffee in the morning. I like it with my afternoon snack.

See, I have always wanted to learn to sail and there are so many lakes in Minneapolis to learn how to do so. It is actually possible I would take both classes. Still... I live in a pretty landlocked area and am as unspur of the moment as it gets. :)

I only like coffee with brunch, it tastes better at brunch, I don't know why.

I voted "sailing lessons" simply because it seems like something you've not mentioned before, seems like something different.

Besides if you learn to sail, you can put a sail on your car and save money on gas. :)

Sailing scares the shit out of me. My uncle took me once when I was a kid and I hated every single sucktacular second of it. It was this small, two person sailboat and he wasn't the greatest at sailing it. That may have had something to do with it. That and I am afraid of water that's over my head from a traumatic childhood experience. So sailing is pretty much right out.

But you may enjoy it, so I voted for sailing lessons. Plus, there might be pictures of you in a swim suit. ;)

Really? Caffeine is my big vice, though I don't really see it as that.

My grandpa used to sail when I was really little but he stopped for some reason. Every time I watch the boats on Nokomis I want to try it. Plus I am surprised there aren't pictures of me in a swimsuit on the internet already. Weird.

I was trying to think when was the last time I wore a swimsuit. It has to be a year ago and that was because I was at a hotel with a pool. Before that it must have been years.

I was thinking about getting a two piece one this summer so I could go to the lakes and hang out.

Raelly? Is it just the way you paddle that you don't like? I never seem to be able to do the kayak paddle as well as the canoe one. Plus I feel sort of trapped in a kayak.

I think I will, it would be a good middle of the summer class to take.

I tend to fluctuate; some days I have 1 cup in the morning and then water all day, and some days I have 8 cups before 10:30am.

Unless there is brunch involved then I have like 4 cups of coffee.

Yeah, I have fallen over a few times. Once while camping into really cold weather and I wasn't able to warm up for days. Still, it is a matter of just knowing where your center of gravity is.

Kayaks are just as shallow as canoes, right? So you could use them to go down Minnehaha?

I've only fallen out once, and that was when my 'friend' Kris dumped me out of her canoe whilst trying to pull it out of a lake.

It's just that when I'm a canoe I sit there REALLY stiffly and try not to move at all. I dunno.

My kayak has a pretty big cockpit so I can move around petty easily and not feel trapped at all. And I'm probably getting a bigger one this year.

I'm petty sure kayaks are way shallow. You're just a lot closer to the water in them.

When we were kids we would have "canoe wars" where the point was to knock the other people out of their canoe. I got really good at knowing how my weight would effect the tippiness of the canoe.

What size kayak do you have? I haven't bought a canoe because I don't know where I would store it. Sometimes I want a garage.


I think that might be part of the problem, I like sitting up higher. Anyways, tomorrow my brother, sister-in-law and I are going to the Duluth Pack store. I am super excited.

My kayak is 9'4" long (which means I need to get a license for it), but I plan on getting a bigger one this year so I can take the dog. I'm hoping I can get a single-person one she'll fit in, but I'll get a tandem if I need to.

I had a 17' one last year for a few days - it was still stable but it was impossible to navigate, so I took it back.

Canoes definitely have more room, it'd be MUCH easier to get the dog in one... but I want to be able to have her jump out and pull her back in. (:

Yeah, the 17' would be hard with one person. Was it a tandem? Canoes are great for dogs, though it is much harder to have them get back into the canoe if they jump out.

Do you ever go canoe camping? That store is pretty much a staple of that sort of camping.

REI is great, I should see if Eric wants to go on sunday so we can rock climb!

It was a tandem. But it had a rudder and paddles so I figured it'd be OK.

IT WAS NOT. A slight breeze and I'd be going wherever the thing felt like, with a scared dog leaning on me making it hard to paddle.

I've never gone ANY camping. Yeah I know.

I'd like to try that rock-wall at the Bloomington REI, maybe in a few weeks when my ankle's all better.

She's been in a motorboat before, but not in a kayak. I'm pretty sure she could get used to it, she loves the water. She enjoyed the part where we stopped and swam around for a while. I want to take her with because I feel guilty leaving her home while I have outdoor fun!

I didn't grow up in an environment that was conducive to camping. For one, the county's too small. Also my parents couldn't really stand hanging out with us (:

Now that I think about it, school forced us on a camping trip in the... 9th grade I think. made us make our own tents and stuff. It SUCKED.

Some of my friends said they'd take me camping, but we just never found the time and now they have a baby.

I suppose that is a good excuse. :P. My parents actually don't like camping at all. It is just me and my siblings that like it so much. I also went a lot as a girl scout.

You should go! My favorite camping is canoe camping because you move every day. I love this route. I have seen moose, bear and eagles along this route and rarely people.
