New Year Stuff

The remodel has begun. This is half way through. I should have taken a "before" short but I forgot. Stay tune for progress shots. Also posts about how I miss my baby and how I am tempted to take a road trip across North Dakota in January to spend a day and a half with her.

So, what all are you doing?

First, we are updating the electrical.

Then we are going to fix the seams in the photo above with pilasters along the walls and bulkheads along the ceiling (sort of like this: http://mitrecontracting.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54f8e2c4388330133ed20c085970b-500wi but spanning from one side to the other.). That will cover up the two giant seams in the ceiling, the exposed studs and some gaps in the walls.

The ceilings are going to be made flat and we are putting in crown molding.

I am going to paint everything, the molding is going to all be white, and the walls will be updated. The giant bookshelf will be going because I think it is too dark and makes the whole place look cluttered (we have it because it covers up a giant hole in the wall).

The upper kitchen cabinets are going to be raised, we are changing out all the light fixtures and we are building in some shelving.

The bathroom that you can sort of see is getting some crown molding, a new paint job and a new toilet.

Finally, the floors are going to be patched where we removed walls and refinished.

Then my bank account will cry.

It will be so awesome, though! I would be sad to lose all that book storage but you're right. It makes the windows look a little cramped.

I think once we figure out our finances after all this, we are going to buy a couple free standing bookshelves to go in that space. Maybe 6 ft high (the ones in the picture at almost 10 feet high) and not going window to window.

I think it will be great. I am so excited, I have been wanting to do this for almost 10 years, it is time. At some point I'll post the budget but other than the electrical work, it isn't terrible.

So, if I'm understanding this rigbt, the bulkhead, etc is to help unify where the second unit demolition marks are?

Yes, that is the hope. Trying to get the whole ceiling flat and prefect is really expensive and we can't take take down anymore studs off the the exposed corners (below) so we decided to make an eyesore a feature. I hope.

Yay, though definitely sounds like a bit of work! I have joined the painting party however, because meeting new people is fun and painting isn't *so* bad really. It will be cool to see how it progresses. :)
