Houses

Sometimes I go daydream about houses. I sometimes find good deals, like this one

I think, it is cheap, a block from the river, in a nice neighborhood but it doesn't have a garage and it would need a new kitchen. Still, at that price it would be worth finishing.

[livejournal.com profile] gwangi says "For the price of the house and the roof and the renovations and a new kitchen we could get someplace nice that didn't need fixing."

Someday we are actually going to go house shopping and it will be interesting.

I still want to build my own house (or rather design one and have someone else build it). It's the only way to be sure!!!

I agree with Zach on this one.

There's no way to be sure. A builder can mess up a million ways and you'll never know till several years later.

I love looking at houses! ...but given the amount of work that clearly needs to be done on that one, I'm not sure it's a good deal. You'd need to get a contractor in to examine it and figure out what the damage is and how much it will cost to fix it. If the roof is broken there may be water intrusion.

Yep, also in this camp, though it's been slow to realize. DIY and renovating always sounds interesting to me, but Chris does not dig it at all, so spending the money up front for a place where huge projects (kitchen, roof, etc) have been done is more our speed. Though we'll see what happens when we wind up getting a house... maybe he'll all of a sudden get way in to DIY? (Doubtful!)

I'd say if you choose reputable builders you're a lot less likely to have crap happen.

But I was talking more about features and amenities. If you want to make sure you have that garage, and gas stove, and two bathrooms, and a basement, and geothermal heating, and secret passages and so forth. the only way to be sure is to design the thing yourself.

There is something to be said for moving into a place that does not need a ton of work, and being able to just unpack and enjoy the place. It's hard to find time for gardening when you are knee deep in renovations.

Yeah, I don't know if I would actually buy it but Zach really wants a completed house and I sort of want a fixer upper.

I sometimes wish Zach was more into DIY because I am really into it. However, it is hard to do something like that when your partner really dislikes it. I haven't done much DIY since meeting Zach.
