CSA

There is a CSA that drops at Gage. I really want to do it but [livejournal.com profile] gwangi isn't sure we would use it all. Also, it is $576, which is a lot but I am pretty sure we would eat a lot of fun stuff.

I wish we had a garden and wouldn't have to think about this stuff!

We did a CSA for a couple of years but we're giving up on it this year. It wasn't just that we didn't use it all - the first year we did a half-share so it wasn't a TON of stuff - it's also that you have NO idea what you'll get so you can't really plan ahead. You have to do the rest of the shopping/farmer's markets AFTER you get your CSA so that you don't double-up on stuff.

Plus the last two months ended up being nothing but a ton of different kind of squash.

I love the idea of a CSA but honestly I can get everything I was getting from them, and more, and in better quantities, at the farmer's market.

That is what Zach tells me but I love the idea of it! I am okay with the randomness of the food (it is fun!) but it might be too random.

We just don't go to the farmer's market enough. :\

You guys could always try it for a year and see how it goes. Can you do a half-share, or go in on one with a coworker?

Actually, I was just talking to one of my coworkers are she is willing to share a share with me.

I fail to see how a garden would solve this problem. How is planting, weeding, and watering a garden only to lose most of your crops to various pests (bugs, bunnies, and/or bums) easier than having things delivered to your office or going to the farmers market?

But it's so REWARDING!!!

You would need a pretty huge garden though.

You probably won't eat it all. But it's still super fun. It's like a suprise present every week!

$576 is a lot all at once but it's really only about $50 a week for a lot of veggies.

I think it would be fun! This one runs for 18 weeks so it is only ~$30 a week.

See I was doing that math in my head too, and farmer's market just ends up a LOT cheaper. Even if I spent $20 a week there (which I don't) and it lasted 6 months (which it doesn't) that's still under $500. And that's just buying stuff I know I'll use.

Have your parents/Eric/Jens & Ann/Serinia go in on it with you.

I second this idea. Most of my experience with CSAs has come as the result of the fact that the output per membership is so high that it's difficult for even a family of four using half a membership to use all of the veggies they come away with leading them to give me free CSA veggies.

We split a share with a friend, and I wasn't that crazy about it. You never know what/how much you're getting, so it's hard to plan ahead. And frankly, I am so boring when it comes to vegetables. There were never nearly enough tomatoes, and always too many things shaped like UFOs. Farmers market + garden is where it's at.
