Who Says Romance is Dead?
Sep. 17th, 2010 03:50 pmAs you can imagine,
gwangi and I are pretty serious and have been talking about making our relationship formal for sometime. I am not really anit-marriage, I just have never been someone that has been in a huge rush to get married. However, my car accident on Monday made me realize a few things.
1) I feel really lucky that I didn't get hurt in that accident.
2) If I got hurt in that accident my parents would have been notified, not Zach.
3) If I had been killed in that accident all my assets would have gone to my parents and siblings*, not Zach.
Before you say "What assets?", remember that I am 33 and have been saving for retirement since I was 21. I have a condo that is 50% paid off. I wouldn't expect Zach to stay in Minneapolis if I wasn't around but I am pretty far down the path of thinking of any assets and debts as "ours".
I suppose that this is one of the major things marriage does, it protects the two people in the relationship. I just haven't been in a serious enough relationship to really think about it.
*I randomly put my siblings down when I open up 401k, IRAs or ROTHs. They don't even know about it and I am sure it is pretty unequal amounts at this point.

Date: 2010-09-17 09:04 pm (UTC)It's a pretty cool thing, marriage. It took me two attempts to get the right spouse, but it was worth it in the end. And you can get all the legal rights and protections with one marriage license that gay people currently spend thousands of dollars making alternative arrangements to get - and they still don't always get it. (Which sucks, and I hope that it changes soon!)
I highly recommend it.
