Computers

Last week I realized that my home computer was 4 years old. Weird. I also realized that it only had a gig of RAM in it, which might be why it is seems so slow at times (my work computer is pretty beefy). I also have this weird random extra computer that I used to back things up and store my music collection but it didn't work out as well as I thought it would.

So... I am buying an external hard drive for my home computer, maxing out the RAM in it (8 gigs!) and fixing up that other computer to give to my sister. This is making me feel like I am decluttering, which is good because I have been feeling the need to do so since Eric got back and has been going through his stuff in the dining room.

Just a note-- if you're running 32-bit Windows XP, it won't recognize more than 2.5G of RAM.

I know but this way I don't have to think about it when I upgrade.

I had the same thought process but having 4GB of ram made my 32 bit xp install unstable. I'm not sure exactly why but I think it has to do with RAM pushing up the address space of PCI, which even though I set up my motherboard to remap the PCI range to below 4GB, I suspect that some of it was ending up not addressable.

I'm running XP x64 now and it's completely stable, but of course driver compatibility isn't so good. I think this is one of Microsoft's bigger failures; not switching to 64-bit with Vista or Windows 7, even though the baseline amount of RAM on systems is rapidly growing. As long as x64 is some special, it will have lackluster support.

I have a 64-bit machine at work and I agree that the support is pretty lackluster.

I'll try it and see. Seriously, the ram was so cheap that I am not conserned about having to roll back.

Plus I have a feeling I'll just put 4 gigs in the one I am sending to my sister so I don't have to worry about it.

1Gb is plenty ... Oh, you use Windows? Nevermind.

:P

I am a Microsoft developer. I sold my soul a long time ago.

Seriously, VS on my home computer is awful!

Yay decluttering! I am trying to find someone to sit with Mr. Kirby so I can spend some time in the basement going through the clothes he has outgrown!
It's a little late for the spring cleaning -- but I need my decluttering fix!

Gawd, the years go by. I have lots of newer equipment...but I think my netbook is the newest by about 4-5 years!

I ordered a Dell desktop online in January 2003. I had a great paying job, and have no regrets. Still works fine (I upgraded the memory to 1 gig). Was on Earthlink with it, and when I quit, was never able to get the Earthlink config. out of it. (which is fine. it's perm. offline now, and I use it for burning discs and transferring files from WMA to MP3

Saw a NEWER Dell desktop at a garage sale last weekend...for $30... Oh!

yeah, my computer isn't worth any money, however, it is works fine and this is the first upgrade I have done to it in all that time. Plus I don't think I spent that much on it. Maybe $1000? Considering how much I use it I don't have any issues with putting another $150 into it (that is with the external hard drive).
