Work Poll

It isn't really a secret that I like my job most days. I don't always like the specifics of what I work on but I love making websites and I don't think I would change my career to something else.

Anyways, I want to know about you. Do you like what you do? If you are a stay-at-home parent I consider that a career or job or whatever.

I can change careers and it's back to school for me in January! Also, what I'm doing can hardly be construed as a "career."

Yeah, after I wrote the poll I wish I had paid more attention to my wording. I always mess up on the polls. :)

I didn't answer the first one as there wasn't a "sometimes" option.

I debated that but I think that black and white makes for better pools.

I would have gone with "yes" but to to recent events, I couldn't.

I figured it had to do with that. A couple years ago I wouldn't have picked yes either but now I am excited to go to work (most days).

It's a very cool feeling.

Sometimes I am amazed that they pay me to play all day!

I've spent most all of the time at my current job thinking about what I'd rather be doing for a living. After 6 years, I'm not sure if I have any answer. The thing is, that I might not like some of the things about my line of work, but I think I have it pretty good here :)

Sometimes having a job that you are ok with that allows you to do more in your personal life is nice. :)

I'm going to add to this. I answered every question, despite them being yes or no. But it's complicated.

• Do I EVER wake up at that hour excited to go out and do what I woke up that early to do? NO. I would not wake up at 6:30 in the morning for anything if I didn't have to. That being said, the fact that I'm waking up to go to work doesn't make it any better, but I'm overall ambivalent beyond the early part.

• Would I change if I could? Yes, but it's complicated. I used to love love love this place for many reasons.
1 - coworkers
2 - lax work environment
3 - no dress code
4 - I learned cool new things every day
Most of those are no longer true, unfortunately. (Also, everyone assumes this - I haven't stopped learning new things because I've learned everything there is to know, it's because my job has literally been dumbed down over the years.) With growth comes change. That being said, I still like a good chunk of my coworkers and still have a loyalty to the company. Doesn't mean I haven't applied to things as they cropped up (things that I unfortunately never got interviewed for). Doesn't mean I don't long for a junior admin position that pays at least 10k more than I'm making now. If something like that were to crop up that I actually got an offer on, I would hope for a lax environment and the ability to look weird, but you can't have everything, right?

• Do I want further education in my field? Yes. The certs I am interested in would not only give me benefits at my current job, but would also be good resume fodder in the future.

Well... I would agree with you on the 6:30 thing. I don't like doing that.

Can you talk to them about getting more education? You just got a promotion, right? So you should know more also, right?

You'd certainly think so. They're willing to compensate financially for some classes/certs, but not others.

Weird. You would think that they would want to train up their employees to keep them around.

Generally, I don't like having to go to work everyday... I think that has to do with the project I'm mired in. Still, even if it wasn't the project, there'd still be the responsibility of keeping all of our critical, moneymaking systems running, and being the ubersmart senior technical resource.

I enjoy what I do, but not the stresses that come with it. I think my dream job would be a darkened lab and a modest budget to tinker and come up with Nifty Shit(tm) on occasion.

Fo me the stress is part of it. I don't love the stress just I get a little addicted to it and when I don't have it I feel at a loss on what to do with myself. I hate those days when I come to work and only have maintence stuff to do.

I found it hard to answer, because I have a real job, but I've been off work on mat leave so long I keep thinking of that as my job, so my answers got kinda mixed up!

From: [identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com
That would have been hard! :)

I got to answer yes to both of the first two! Woo.

And right now, I just have no desire to have any further education for my career, at all, whatsoever. Unfortunately I have until spring 2010 before I'm truly done with my continuing education.

I never turn down education but I am learning so much on a day to basis that I feel like I don't really need clases.

Let me clarify that part of my yes answer to question #1 is rooted in the fact that I am greatful to have any job at all right now, and to have one that is pretty secure for the time being.

From: [identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com
That is a valid reason to be happy to go to work. :)

What is your job now? I am assuming that you want to change it to yoga teaching. :)

Left, traveled and come back to pay for teach training. recently told God if she had something else for me to do that could pay my obligations and be more fun, I wanted it.
