So, one of the things you can do now when you have a baby is Cord Blood Banking. You can donate the cord blood for science or you can pay to have it stored in case your baby (or someone else in your family) needs it sometime.

While I get donating it for science, I don't get paying $1000-2000 to keep it around. It seems like just another way to get new parents to buy something. Plus yet another thing to stress about.

Then again, if they told me my baby's cord blood would migraines if they get them I would think about it. (Yes, I have another one, I am never going to diss migraine medication again).

I might have a very narrow perspective on it, but i thought the advantage to cord blood was that it was nonspecific and you didn't need to use your own to get a good match. If that's the case, then donating is great, but hording seems pointless as well as expensive. Not to mention the fact that you can't get very much out of a single cord, so even in the remote chance it's needed, it might not be enough. Either these private companies are exploiting parents who don't understand the science, or I don't understand the science. I'd say both are likely.

I think you are right, people just don't understand the science and companies are playing on the "do the best for your baby" thing that people go through. I mean, you are already spending so much money on your kid, what is a couple thousand more. Even if the chances are 1 in 400 that it would help anyone.

I am not sure if we will donate it. I'll let [livejournal.com profile] gwangi decide that since he is the scientist. However, the ads on baby websites and emails are very insistent that THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER!

Hey as long as you don't eat the placenta I think you're OK.

That is what I was thinking! I can't believe how many ads there are for it!

I always felt for you with the migraine thing but after yesterday I am amazed at how you can tolerate so many of those awful things.
I'd donate the cord blood but don't see the point in paying for saving it.
