My cats are on a diet. Zach and I are still trying to figure out what that means. To me that is just lowering the amount of dry food the cats get and allowing them to have the wet food. To Zach that means they should only get wet food as a treat and only fill up their bowl when it is empty.

Last night the bowl went empty after we went to bed. I guess Xerxes was up all night knocking things over, chasing other cats and trying to eat my good rug. Poor Zach got up and dealt with it all then ended up on the couch watching movies. I am pretty sure that has killed any small inkling of Baby Rabies that I had infected him with.

The best part of the night? I slept really well.

However, I did wake up with a migraine*, which I suppose makes up for being able to sleep through all of that. I am hoping it goes away soon, I have a lot of work I need to get done today and I just can't get much done when I am like this.

*For those of you following along, this is the 14th day this month that I have had a headache.

Gotta go with Zach on the food thing. Wet food = treat.

i agree with the wet food as treat, too. though my cats are lucky if they get greenies. i'm probably a terrible mom.

have you tried the weight control food? and rather than filling up when empty, fill up only twice a day at specific times. my cats (each) get 1/3 cup in the morning, and 1/3 when i get home in the afternoon. if i'm going to be late coming home, i'll give them a little extra in the morning. they don't really overeat, but they do get weight control food. their food dish is pretty rarely empty.

When we put my roommate's big bounder cat on a diet, we started by switching his food to a denser dry food (Solid Gold Indigo Moon), and then changing his feeding schedule. It really worked well for him, he was eating less and learned to portion out his food for the times between feedings and not just vacuum it all up into his mouth right away.

Our vet told us, when she was fixing kitty and saw the beginnings of a little fatty taking root, that we should feed her only wet food. I say told, but it was more a lecture on the evils of dry food, and carbs, and whatever. WTF do we know, so we've been feeding her wet food only ever since. She was a big fat whiner when we first made the switch (we had previously been feeding her all dry with wet food as a treat), but now she is pretty good about it.

If you guys can't come to a consensus, just call up the vet and ask him/her to clarify.
