Biking

I think I am going to bike to the Y tonight. My poor bike is so lonely in the basement. :(

I really want a single gear bike. I wonder if I could find one and try to fix it up myself. It might be a good spring obsession.

Is it weird that I want to take a bath before I go to the gym? I am not going to but I really want to.

Converting a geared bike to single speed isn't difficult. You may need to build or have built a new rear wheel, but that might only be if you want one that you can switch between single speed and fixed gear.

It should be no problem to find a bike to convert, really. Mr. Michael Recycles Bicycles would be a good place to check, and they're great people.

Yes, we converted my Surly Cross-Check from geared over to single/fixed. I have no idea how much we spent on parts, but Chris built me a new rear wheel with a flip-flop hub on it so I can switch from single speed to fixed gear easily. Otherwise, it was just a matter of stripping off the shifters, derailleur, and associated cables. I still have the front derailleur and chainrings on, we didn't get around to taking them off or didn't have the right tools. That wheel was the hardest part, since he had to build it. You can pay a shop to do that for you, or sometimes you can find one used or new.

There are probably lots of resources out there on the internet and probably some on Mpls Bike Love too.

I came home with the mission to bike on Monday, and would not be denied! ;-) Not by uncharged air compressor (found my manual foot pump). And not by my U-lock holder breaking and falling off after the first three blocks (went home and tossed it inside my door). And not by the 6-8 inches of water submerging part of the path around Lake Calhoun. But I had to race home to not catch a cold from my wet feet.

I didn't actually get my bike out. The greenway was still wet and everything has salt on it. We need a good rain.

Still... I want to ride around Calhoun now. :\
