Running

A couple weeks ago I decided to go running. I am not sure why but I have a feeling turning 36 and being in the worst shape of my life had a lot to do with it.

I was sort of doing the couch to 5k for a couple runs but I have sort of fallen into the routine that my high school cross country coach had us do. I run until I am breathing too hard then walk until I can talk. Right now I am running about a 12 minute mile and I can run about 1/3 of a mile without stopping to walk. I am hoping to get that to 1/2 of a mile by the end of this week.

For the first time in my life I am not putting any pressure on this. I keep telling myself that it is better to run slow than go fast and have to walk more. That getting up and running for 20-25 minutes in the morning isn't a big deal and if I want to run for longer I can once I get in condition. Plus it is really nice to get outside every day. I spend so much of my life inside I forget how much I like the outdoors.

I have decided that if I keep this up until Christmas I am going to get a new pair of fancy running shoes.

Oh, and a cool thing I didn't have last time I was running? A smart phone to keep track of times and mileage. It is so awesome to see that!

You should get Gage to put a small gym in the office. You could work out on your lunch break instead of having to get up in the morning.

There is a gym here but it is old equipment (like 60s) and the shower has a schedule. Plus I think the main reason I am even doing this is because I want to be outside.

Add me on RunKeeper!

I have been using Map My Run but I'll download this one. I am trying not to push any pressure on myself to do more than get out there and run a little every other day.

I was a MMR user for quite a few years, and I love the site itself, but then when I got a smartphone I discovered that their app actually sucks, and that was kind of a dealbreaker for me. The RK app is awesome and syncs with everything everywhere should you ever want to do that.

This is great!

It is weird, I forgot that I actually like running and I don't need to go to a gym to do it.

Yay running!

Gear Running store in Edina (near the Chatterbox) is where I get all my running shoes. They are family owned and everyone there is really knowledgeable and nice.

Awesome, I was going to ask. I sort of feel like I need new shoes because it isn't as comfortable as it should be. I am sort of waiting to see if it is just being out of shape that is causing that.

You should get new shoes anyway for running b/c the padding/stabilization in shoes wears out surprisingly quickly.

I've never been to Gear Running, but if they have a gait specialist there be sure to see them before just picking out a pair. Or there's a lot of shoe info on the Runner's World website (for various foot types and gaits and such).

I know they do, I used to run all the time but I got lazy when I met Zach. The shoes I am using are really new. I bought them about a year and a half ago when I was thinking about starting running again but I never did. I think I have only worn them a couple times since I bought them.
