All my friends

[livejournal.com profile] sacramentalist has this cool widget that allows him to make a graph of your friends and how they relate. I think it is very cool. You can see my brunch group, the people I play rock band with, the people I met because of robotskull and all the people I met because of [livejournal.com profile] posthaste. Also my exes and other old friends that I have on my friends list so they can keep up to date with me.

In other news, I thought I would have all day Saturday open to bake either coconut cupcakes or lemon poppyseed muffins but then I realized that I was going to visit my friend Heather. I should figure out when I am leaving and when I should get home. Hmm...

I don't think that's really how people relate, but more how they happen to interact on your LJ, right? I mean how many times people reply to each other's comments?

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it is who is friends with who.

[identity profile] sterlingphoenix.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But then wouldn't there only be ONE arrow between two people?

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they are to show if someone is a friend but the other people doesn't friend them back.

[identity profile] sterlingphoenix.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
BTW not saying it's not cool, just trying to reverse-engineer exactly what it does (: I'm thinking to maybe spiders through profiles and looks at flists, but it looks to me like it goes through your LJ and looks at conversation threads (:

The script is called lj2friends.pl, by [livejournal.com profile] darxus. There was mention of it about 5 years ago on lj_nifty

It spiders through friends lists by calling the .bml scripts. I believe a person's friends won't show if the the friends list isn't publically viewable.

It creates a .dot file graph specification. Then you can put it through a plotter, like neato, or springgraph, which is what I used.

Then I don't understand how there can be multiple arrows between people?.. I mean if I'm your friend, then we're only friends once, right?

[identity profile] sterlingphoenix.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to reverse-engineer this thing here (; Ok, there's like two arrows from magicmarmot to me. Now I don't think either of us ever tried to friend each other, I did respond to his comment once or twice. Same with some other people. There's a two-way arrow between Karri and I, and that makes sense if we're both friends on LJ (: Also if you look, there's like a million arrows between spongebobjess and theophenia_79, which makes sense since they interact a lot, but you can only be friends with someone once, right? (:

[identity profile] sacramentalist.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's strictly friends association. comments/posts aren't involved. You're just seeing overlapping lines.

[identity profile] sterlingphoenix.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But why would they overlap, or even be more than one, if you're friends with someone? Like there's a whole lot of lines going from Bertine to you, I'm trying to figure out why.

[identity profile] sacramentalist.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the connections coming from people from the other side. For instance, one of the lines coming from magic_marmot is coming from either damncutekitty, or goobermaster.

[identity profile] sterlingphoenix.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, this DEFINITELY needs to be colour-coded (:

[identity profile] sacramentalist.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm doing a batch right now. But I like the cut of your moxie, so I'll queue you up.

[identity profile] sterlingphoenix.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Good, that way we can have a light, easy-to-read, mostly empty chart (;

[identity profile] sacramentalist.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It gets really confusing when a lot of people have the same friends... they mash down on each other.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You and Steve should be friends. You both are awesome!

[identity profile] posthaste.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"cut of your moxie" = one of the most underused phrases of the century.

[identity profile] sacramentalist.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Here you go

Note how cori_chronicle's line passes under heidianna

I don't know the graph algorithm well enough to explain why they one if past the other. There may be a "double-bond" when they are mutual friends.

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It is fun!

[identity profile] posthaste.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
does this mean i'm made of awesome?

[identity profile] bertine.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
YES
